Created in 1689 for a school for girls in London, Purcell's short opera has found a lasting place in the operatic canon, thanks to its combination of lively fantasy and heart‐rending lamentation, intimacy and grand drama. Véronique Gens delivers Dido's Lament at the head of a strong cast of soloists, lead by Jean‐Claude Malgoire and his acclaimed ensembles, whose expertise in this repertoire cannot be overstated.
