Cagliostro
演出简介
Strauss decided to compose a libretto focused on the famed Sicilian buccaneer Giuseppe Balsamo, also know as Count Alexander Cagliostro (1743‐1795), after a tour of Italy, a country in which his work was rapturously received.
Cagliostro, an operetta in three acts, was premiered in 1875 at the Theater an der Wien. It was an instant success with memorable arias such as ‘Zigeunerkind, wie glänzt dein Haar’ (‘Gypsy child, how your hair shines’) and ‘Die Rose erblüht, wenn die Sonne sie küsst’ (‘the rose blooms when kissed by the sun’) soon entering the popular repertoire.
