The Opéra de Lyon presents Prokofiev's opera, 'The Fiery Angel' in the striking production by Australian director Benedict Andrews. Ausrine Stundyte and Laurent Naouri sing the main roles, under the musical direction of Kazushi Ono.
'The Fiery Angel', based on a novel of the same name by Valery Bryusov, was composed at a time when psychoanalysis gained recognition, and tells a story of the extremes of the human mind and soul, with the taboo subject of demonic possession. Set in the Middle Ages, we follow the beautiful Renata, who since her childhood sees the apparition of an angel, through a tormented journey between reality and delirium, ending with her meeting with Faust and Mephistopheles. For this production, Benedict Andrews conceived a grotesque and frenetic environment that echoes the furious distractions of Renata's mind.
