Ros Marbà: Barcelona Symphony Orchestra

Sobre o Evento

Pianist Josep Colom and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Antoni Ros Marbà, will perform works by Homs, Ravel and Mendelssohn at the Auditori de Barcelona.

The Scottish Symphony owes its title to the composer's trip to Scotland in 1829. Mendelssohn had gone to rest after his successful concerts in London, where he was already considered a great composer. Impressed by the landscape, the intention of writing a symphony came quickly. However, the score was not completed until thirteen years later, in a lengthy process of reflection that makes the piece his most personal work. Still, the source of inspiration for the work is not so much the folklore of Scotland but rather its landscape, especially the ruins and castles. This would explain the dark and meditative tone of the beginning of the symphony, which reminds us of Beethoven's Pastoral, a great contrast to the dancing mood at the end.

The Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and Orchestra in D major is one of the most performed works of Ravel, partly because of its peculiar genesis: the piece was written between 1929 and 1930 as a commission from the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right hand in combat during the First World War. Inspired by the studies for the left hand by Saint‐Saëns, the piece overcomes the technical constraints with imagination in abundance, making it a masterpiece.

Written in 1982, Biofonia is one of the iconic works of the composer Joaquim Homs, a disciple of Robert Gerhard and one of the most outstanding members of the Catalan avant‐garde.
