A Florentine Tragedy & The Dwarf: Alexander von Zemlinsky
Sobre o Evento
Enjoy two wonderful operas by Alexander von Zemlinsky at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the heart of Barcelona: Eine florentinische Tragödie (A Florentine Tragedy) and Der Zwerg (The Dwarf).
These two short operas by the Austrian composer Alexander von Zemlinsky, whose works have received attention all over the world since the so‐called "Zemlinsky Renaissance". Despite his close ties with the Vienna School (his sister was married to Schoenberg), Zemlinsky did not employ the twelve‐note technique in his refined music. Both of these one‐act operas are based on Oscar Wilde's works. The first — after his unfinished play "A Florentine Tragedy" — tells the tale of a Florentine merchant, Simone, who catches his wife Bianca in the company of a nobleman, Prince Guido Bardi. The drama heightens as Simone defies the prince until ultimately he kills him, to his attractive wife's surprise and delight. "Der Zwerg" is based on the story "The Birthday of the Infanta" and relates the agonizing experience of a dwarf who becomes aware of his physical repulsiveness when he is sent as a birthday present to a beautiful, naïve and frivolous Spanish princess.
Forty‐five minutes before each performance, an information session about the opera, open to all members of the audience, will be held in the Foyer.
