A medieval fairytale of true love triumphant, set to a sparkling score by Glazunov, the work is regarded as an encyclopedic example of classical ballet in all its forms. Nureyev brought the work, almost unknown in the West, to prominence when he defected and it has remained an audience favourite ever since.
