Although he wrote some 40 operas and several other stage works, the ballets 'Giselle' (1841) and 'The Corsair' (1856), as well as the wonderful Christmas Carol 'O Holy Night' (1843) remain his best‐known works. Adam's last work, 'The Corsair', is loosely based on the 1814 poem 'The Corsair' by Lord Byron.
