Half of France was occupied by Germany, and the other half was subject to the Pétain government at Vichy. From armistice to liberation, the musical life of these black years was torn between exile, resistance and collaboration.

Some composers, like Florent Schmitt, were covered with honors, whilst others, like Darius Milhaud, were forced to flee France. A program of songs both permitted and forbidden during the Occupation.
