Madama Butterfly

Over het evenement

Enjoy the guest performance of Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" by the Belarus Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Puccini had always shown a strong feeling for background colour in his operas, but this work was his first chance to use the intriguingly foreign element of exoticism. He thoroughly studied original Japanese music and books on Japanese customs, rituals and architecture. The results are reflected in the score of the opera, containing seven authentic Japanese melodies and the themes include the Japanese imperial hymn. However, the love theme of the beautiful and fragile Butterfly is entirely Italian in origin. This blend of oriental exoticism and Italian passion has resulted in one of the most popular operas in the repertoire of opera theatres.

“Madama Butterfly” tells the story of a Japanese girl’s impossible love for an American navy lieutenant. Her love is as tragic and beautiful as the flight of a butterfly at dusk, when the light warms, dazzles, and burns.
