Commissioned by Queen Isabel II, Madrid’s Teatro Real, or Royal Theater, opened in 1850. Thorough renovations completed in 1997 retained the historic decorative style while ensuring the technical infrastructure for a 21st century opera house. Today, Teatro Real is among the most important music institutions in Europe.
