Leipzig is endowed with one of the richest classical musical histories of any single locale in the world. This tremendous town devoted to music offers a deep and prolonged connection to the varied worlds of Bach, the Schumanns, Mendelssohn, and more. The residence of one of Germany’s most famous orchestras, the impressive Gewandhaus, is only one of the many revered halls and houses that calls Leipzig home; the Thomaskirche, where J. S. Bach served as cantor, is another. As if to overwhelm visitors with grandeur, the former homes of Leipzig residents Clara and Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn are open to the public, as is, of course, the magnificent Oper Leipzig.
