There the two lovers live happily, but one day Alfredo's father, Germont, arrives: he asks Violetta to leave Alfredo for good because their untoward cohabitation threatens to break up the marriage of his other daughter, Alfredo's sister. Violetta tries to object, but eventually, convinced by Germont, she writes a farewell letter to Alfredo, explaining that she is homesick for Paris and her former life.
