Teodor Currentzis Mahler 5 at Festspielhaus Baden‐Baden
About the Event
For conductor Teodor Currentzis, music is always emotional exhaustion: reflection on the last things, a religious act, world redemption pathos, overwhelming. When Mahler's Fifth begins with a funeral march, only to set heaven and hell in motion in the second movement, Currentzis is completely in his element. He seeks out the extremes and thus finds his way into the hearts of the listeners. Our tip for listening? Everyone loves the first movement and the Adagietto. But pay attention to the less popular third movement! It's not at the center of the symphony for nothing. And that's exactly how it should be heard: as the central movement, a ländler to which the cosmos suddenly opens up.
