Teatro Verdi Trieste
Information, Schedule and Tickets
The Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi is named after the great Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. Its original name was Teatro Nuovo and it was built between 1798 and 1801 by the Italian Architect, Gian Antonio Selva, who was also the architect of the famous La Fenice in Venice. The opera house had several name changes, the first time in 1821, when it was renamed the Teatro Grande, and was the home of two Verdi Opera premieres: Il corsaro (1848) and Stiffelio (1850). The Theatre was finally renamed after Verdi, a few hours after his death in January 1901. Seating ca. 1300 the Teatro Verdi is home of the "International Festival of Operetta" (a reminder of it's Austrian heritage), which takes place each summer.
