Founded in 1842, the New York Philharmonic is one of the Big Five American orchestras and one of the oldest and most respected symphony orchestras in the world. The Philharmonic has seen an extensive ensemble of respected historical names take its helm, such as Antonín Dvorák, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Arturo Toscanini, and Igor Stravinsky. Under the direction of Jaap van Zweden, the Philharmonic will celebrate in the 2019‐2020 season, the ratification of the 19th Amendment with commissions by 19 women composers.
