Sakamoto's last gift to his audience, a celebration of the legendary composer's life and work: screened on the Main Stage of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan , the film‐testament directed by Sakamoto's son Neo Sora and premiered at the 80. Venice International Film Festival, which chronicles the Maestro's last concert and is a celebration of the legendary composer's life and work.
It is the last gift Sakamoto, who passed away on March 28, 2023, wanted to prepare for his audience.
In recent years, Sakamoto was no longer able to perform live. Concerts, let alone tours, were too tiring. Nevertheless, at the end of 2022, Sakamoto gathered his strength to leave the world with one last performance: a concert film whose protagonists were just him and the piano. Curated by Sakamoto himself and presented in the order he decided, the twenty pieces performed in the film narrate his life in music without resorting to words. The selection covers his entire career, from his pop star period with the Yellow Magic Orchestra to the magnificent soundtracks of Bertolucci's films to the music of his latest contemplative album 12. Filmed in an intimate space he knew well, surrounded by his most trusted collaborators, Sakamoto bared his soul through music, knowing it would perhaps be his last chance to present his art. A celebration of the life of an artist in the purest sense of the word, Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus is the swan song of the beloved maestro.
