Orchestra della Toscana – James Conlon
Florence, Teatro Verdi — main
About the Event
James Conlon leads a program focusing on the late 18th‐century Viennese symphonic tradition with pieces by Gluck, Mozart, and Haydn, highlighting the renowned 'Drumroll' Symphony.
Conducted by James Conlon, honorary conductor of the ORT, the program transports us to late 18th‐century Vienna. The American maestro introduces Mozart's famous symphony, along with a masterpiece by Franz Joseph Haydn, who influenced the symphonic genre. Mozart's K.550 is part of a trilogy created in 1788 when he was thirty‐two and is known for its emotional depth in G minor. Haydn's symphony, nicknamed the "Drumroll," starts with a distinct sound effect.
The concert begins with Gluck's opera "Orfeo ed Euridice," which aimed to reform Italian opera through a foundational myth of musical theater, telling the tale of a singer who wins back his wife from the god of the underworld.
