Winter Garden Theatre
New York, USA
One of Broadway’s most venerable theaters, the Winter Garden was originally built by William Vanderbilt to house the American Horse Exchange. New York impresarios, the Shuberts, leased the building and converted it into a theatre in 1911. The unusually wide stage of the Winter Garden has hosted many legendary stars, including Al Jolson, Josephine Baker, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Liza Minnelli. Home to the Broadway production of ‘Cats’ for eighteen years, the theater was completely restored to its 1920s glory when the production closed, and has since hosted a series of large‐scale musicals.
