Musica a Palazzo: La Traviata
Venice, Palazzo Barbarigo‐Minotto — Tiepolo/Alcova
About the Event
Immerse yourself in Verdi great dramatic opera La Traviata and add another unforgettable experience to your stay in Venice. In the impressive atmosphere of the Palazzo Barbarigo‐Minotto, the dramatic power of the opera, interpreted by great singers and musicians, unfolds in candlelight. The Opera is a travelling show and each act is set in a different salon of one of the most fascinating Venetian palaces. The Singers and instrumentalists are performing as they move together with the audience through the halls of the Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto.
Palazzo Barbarigo‐Minotto was built around the fifteenth century as a noble palace overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice. Embellished with beautiful works by famous artists of the eighteenth century, perfectly preserved works by Francesco Fontebasso, Giambattista Tiepolo, Girolamo Mingozzi and the stucco artist Tencalla can still be viewed by admirers and connoisseurs. Originally two separate palaces, the building is now composed of three staterooms facing the Grand Canal and another three facing the Rio Zaguri. The interior includes a 17th century chapel with a Louis XIV‐style floor made of elm wood, with inlays of olive root marquetry. Doors in the same style are banded with walnut and have bronze handles in a vine leaf shape, and floors in the staterooms combine terrazzo and Ventian pastellone techniques.
This noble Venetian building hosts exciting opera performances during the year — Verdi's 'La Traviata' for example — often setting each scene in a different stateroom.
Musica a Palazzo sets the action of Verdi's opera within an authentic historic Venetian palazzo. This contemporary interpretation is closely related to Verdi's own thoughts on dramatic opera. In Verdi's time, the brazen realism of La Traviata caused a scandal at its first performance.
The first act begins in the Portego (central hall) where the spectators will be situated in the role of Violetta's (Traviata) guests. At this joyful celebration, Violetta and Alfredo will be introduced to each other and fall in love. The second act takes place in the Sala Tiepolo whose beauty and intimacy are the perfect setting to appreciate the subtlety of the “interior dialogue” of the characters and to be moved by her conflicts. The drama of Violetta’s illness and death is consummated in the Camera da letto (bedroom with alcove).
Not even the extraordinary 18th‐century stuccos can divert attention from the emotional intensity of Verdi's music: the voices of the singers, in close intimacy, resonate deep within the audience!
During the interval of the performance and surrounded by the magical setting facing the Grand Canal, Musica a Palazzo offers you a glass of Prosecco, soft drinks, and fine liqueurs.

Giuseppe Verdi
Giuseppe Verdi was an Italian opera composer. From a young age, he developed a musical education with the help of a patron and soon dominated the Italian opera. In fact by his 30s, he became one of the most influential opera composer all over the classical scene. His most famous operas are Il Trovatore, Rigoletto and La Traviata. Furthermore, he was able to establish himself as a landowner with the income from his successful operas and focus on his private life. However, he soon returned to the scene with his new popular work Aida (1871), and three masterpieces: Otello, Requiem and Falstaff.

An unusual way to present La Traviata it was very well adapted to suit the uniqueness of the venue. I felt I was part of the production rather than an onlooker. It was a powerful performance which I enjoyed immensely.

Superbe.

Beautiful scenery of the palace but the performance and arrangement of the performance is average. Such antique interior should fulfill the performance of more high standards.

This was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Impressive. I do have one complaint, and that is the seating. It appears the company is trying to sell as many tickets for one show as possible, which creates very uncomfortable seating. Perhaps selling about 15 less tickets might make it a little more bearable. Great show!
