Médée: Opéra Comique
Paris, Opéra Comique — Salle Favart
About the Event
The Opéra‐Comique taps Laurence Equilbey and Marie-Ève Signeyrole to explore the challenging task of modernizing the character of Medea, a complex and tragic figure. Medea, driven by love for Jason, is portrayed as a strong and passionate woman who makes unimaginable sacrifices. Her actions, including the murder of her own children, reveal the depths of her emotions and the consequences of her choices.
Set in Paris, Cherubini's Medea combines elements of comic opera and lyric tragedy to deliver a powerful and emotionally charged performance. Originally premiered at the Théâtre Feydeau, the opera was met with critical acclaim and established Cherubini as a prominent figure in European music. The Opéra‐Comique aims to honor this legacy by inviting Equilbey and Signeyrole to evoke the dramatic essence of Joyce El‐Khoury's portrayal of Medea in the 21st century.
With a rich history and a compelling storyline, Medea continues to captivate audiences with its timeless themes of love, betrayal, and revenge. Equilbey and Signeyrole's interpretation of this classic character honors her legacy and brings new depth and complexity to her portrayal on the modern stage.
