Sant’Agnese in Agone
Sant'Agnese in Agone, a baroque masterpiece from the 17th-century, graces Rome's Piazza Navona. This pivotal square lies at the historic heart of the Italian capital and was built over the former Stadium of Domitian, where the early Christian martyr Saint Agnes met her tragic fate. The crypt, or sacellum infimum, remains the sole survivor from the original structure, marking the exact location of Saint Agnes's execution. Piazza Navona is also celebrated for hosting Bernini’s iconic Fountain of the Four Rivers, which directly faces Sant'Agnese in Agone. Surrounding this fountain are a host of intriguing urban myths, particularly involving the 'Nile' figure sculpted by Bernini and the church's facade, which was designed by his architectural nemesis, Borromini. Legend has it that 'Father Nile' is shielding his eyes as a critical commentary on the impending collapse of the church opposite, a humorous nod to the fierce competitive spirit that raged between Bernini and Borromini. This narrative endures despite historical timelines indicating that Bernini’s fountain predates the church’s construction.
