La Fille du Régiment: Paris Opera
Paris, Opéra Bastille — Main Auditorium
About the Event
At the Paris Opera, Julie Fuchs and Susan Graham set a fast pace for this sparkling and colourful comedy, making La Fille du Régiment a guaranteed remedy for gloom.
Donizetti set to music the story of a young girl who, adopted by the 21st regiment of grenadiers, falls in love with a Tyrolean soldier. He created a work that was more French in nature than French opera itself. France had never seemed as proud as it did when portrayed by the Italian composer. Laurent Pelly’s production is full of tenderness: stationed on a great map of the world, his grenadiers look like the soldiers of our childhood days. The conflicts appear just as childish compared with the love that leaps across borders and the barriers of social class.
