Konzerthaus Berlin: Maxwell Quartet
Berlin, Konzerthaus Berlin — Kleiner Saal
About the Event
Experience the harmonic richness of chamber music composed by legends such as Ludwig van Beethoven, William Byrd, Traditional, and Edmund Finnis in the iconic and globally celebrated Konzerthaus Berlin.
The Maxwell Quartet, four lifelong friends and former Scottish youth orchestra and music school colleagues, blend their shared history of folk and classical melodies in their performances. Together since their postgraduate days at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2010, their programs skillfully weave the traditional folk sounds of Scotland with classical quartet elegance.
The concert begins with time‐honored psalms from Scottish islands, leading into the 2018 premiere of Edmund Finnis’s first quartet. The Times praised the performance for its 'affecting rocking patterns and expressive musings on gravely beautiful polyphony by Byrd, and the natural ease of his writing for strings'. This is succeeded by another work of Byrd, known as the Elizabethan 'Father of Music', who composed sacred Catholic music during the perilous times of the English Reformation. The evening concludes as the quartet explores Viennese Classicism, performing Beethoven’s 15th string quartet, leaving the Scottish landscapes to revel in the splendor of Beethoven’s Vienna.
