About the Event

Enjoy Vivaldi's Four Seasons near the world‐famous Rialto Bridge in Venice performed in 18th century Venetian costumes!

The Four Seasons is Antonio Vivaldi's most famous work. Written in the Baroque era, during the 18th century, it is a set of four violin concertos that represent the seasons of the year. The composer took his inspiration from the countryside around Mantua, where he lived when he wrote the work, including the sounds of flowing creeks and singing birds in his composition.

I Musici Veneziani will perform the famous and exciting 'The Four Seasons' by Antonio Vivaldi: four concerts for violin and strings representing the scenes of nature in music, each inspired by each season of the year. The program is also enriched by three other important concerts for strings.

Established in 1996 with the aim of recreating the artistic tradition of the Republica Serenissima’s most splendid period, the I Musici Veneziani Orchestra, is formed of some of the most skillful Venetian musicians and singers.
It is still the only classical orchestra in the world where the musicians wear baroque style dresses created from original designs.

Scuola Grande di San Teodoro

The Scuola Grande di San Teodoro is dedicated to the original patron saint of Venice. The school is one of a remarkable group - the six Great Schools of the city. The establishment of the school can be traced to 1258, although the current structure was built between 1579 and1613 by the great architect, Tommasi Contin. The facade is topped by five statues, representing four angels and San Teodoro, above the rich entrance portal. The sculptures were created by Bernardo Falcon during the second half of the 17th century. I Musici Veneziani started performing their delightful concerts in the Scuola Grande di San Teodoro in the last few years of the 20th century. Many other artists have also performed in this famous School of Venice, including multiple performances of Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' by international classical stars.

Antonio Vivaldi

Antonio Vivaldi went down in history as a creator of the instrumental concert genre and the father of orchestral music. He was born in Venice on the 4th of March 1678. Vivaldi was a weak and sickly child suffering from asthma, however could not stop him from devoting himself completely to music. His father, Giovanni Batista a professional violinist, taught his elder son Antonio to play the violin. With his father young Antonio met the best musicians of Venice of that time and gave concerts in local churches. He also worked as a violin teacher and later as a music director at the orphanage Ospedalle della Pieta. Meanwhile he composed concertos, sacred works and vocal music and in 1713 he achieved great recognition with his sacred choral music. Vivaldi got captivated by the world of opera and worked both as opera composer and impresario at the Teatro San Angelo. In 1717 he obtained a prestigious position by the prince court in Manua as a director of secular music and worked there until around 1720. During that time he composed his world-renowned masterpiece The Four Seasons. In the 1730's his career dwindled as his music became unfashionable and the great composer died in poverty. It took the world two centuries to rediscover and reevaluate Vivaldi’s music, as it was buried into oblivion after his death. In the early 20th century many previously unknown works were found and immediately captured the hearts of the music lovers.

Wunderbares Konzert, fantastische Musiker, sehr schönes Ambiente.

    Oct 2018

Performance superb — especially the virtuoso violinist performing The Four Seasons in the second half. But the entry to the concert was a total shambles. Customers left standing in a line in the downstairs hall I for almost an hour while incompetent period‐costumed staff were in Venetian chaos, resulting in the concert starting 15 minutes late. Suggest you hire professional front‐of‐house staff and entry systems for future performances.
