Handel's La Resurrezione: Théâtre des Champs‐Elysées
About the Event
Julien Chauvin conducts Le Concert de la Loge in a concert version of Händel's La Resurezzione in the Champs‐Elysées in Paris.
In the Christian religion, Easter Monday marks the first day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Many musicians were inspired by this episode, particularly during the Baroque period. From this liturgical context, the oratorio form was born, drawing heavily on lyrical emotional power. Handel composed over thirty oratorios. While Messiah remains the 'hit' in this field, his other productions should not be underestimated, including this Resurrection dating from 1708, the period when Handel left Germany for Rome to explore Italian musical art more closely. The Bonelli family commissioned this work to be performed in their palace in April 1708, thus overcoming the ban on opera in private homes at the time. In the style of an opera, 'Il caro Sassone' — as the Romans called it — mixes narratives soberly accompanied by basso continuo with brilliant arias, expressing all the mysteries of Christ's Passion. Julien Chauvin has assembled a fine cast for the occasion.
