About the Event

On the last day of 1985, some former students of the Freiburg University of Music decided to found an ensemble dedicated entirely to historically informed performance practice: the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.
This spontaneous idea developed into a unique musical success story that was rewarded with numerous prizes. “Fresh impulses, highly virtuosic, playful lightness, stylish ornamentation, improvisational elements and a remarkable sense of dialog,” is how the jury of the International Classic Music Award recently explained its decision. Concertmaster Cecilia Bernardini, “charismatic captain and sensitive dialog partner” (SWR Kultur), alternates with founder Gottfried von der Goltz in leading the orchestra from the concertmaster's podium. Renowned artists regularly work with the ensemble.
During the Advent season, Berlin audiences can look forward to a festive concert evening with soprano Julia Lezhneva, who will set the mood for the approaching festive season with famous Christmas works by Bach, Handel and Corelli.

Orchestra: Freiburger Barockorchester

Freiburger Barockorchester (Freiburg Baroque Orchestra) is an orchestra originally founded 'to enliven the world of Baroque music with new sounds.' The orchestra, based in Freiburg, Germany now also performs works by later composers such as Beethoven, Schubert and Weber as well as contemporary music. They play small group chamber music as well as symphonies for large orchestras.

The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra gave its first concert in 1987 and began touring abroad with a performance in Amsterdam in 1989 and came to America first in 1995. Today, half of the orchestra's concerts are performed abroad. The musicians chose Gottfried von der Goltz and Petra Müllejans from among their own members as musical directors. (Both von der Goltz and Müllejans are violinists.) The orchestra performs one‐quarter of its concerts under guest conductors, such as Ivor Bolton, René Jacobs, Philippe Herreweghe or Trevor Pinnock.
