Fidelio: Deutsche Oper Berlin
About the Event
Discover Beethoven's famous opera 'Fidelio' in a new version by David Hermann at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera is a monolith in many ways: First, to this day it is considered the quintessential freedom opera. The female protagonist Leonore is one of the most heroic figures in the operatic canon. And despite the repeated political appropriation of the opera and its characters, the work continues to resist one‐sided attributions to this day: The humanistic‐idealistic appeal of Beethoven's music is stronger and more universal than any univocality.
Moreover, Beethoven succeeded here for the first time in composing a specifically German opera. In the combination of bourgeois stirring piece, rescue opera and oratorical appeal to humanity, an alchemy was created that served as a model for German Romantic opera.
