Dresdner Musikfestspiele: Suwanai – NHK Symphony Orchestra – Luisi
Dresden, Frauenkirche Dresden
About the Event
Experience the enchanting melodies of classical music from Johannes Brahms, Alban Berg, and Toru Takemitsu within the historic walls of Dresden's beloved and internationally acclaimed Frauenkirche Dresden.
The Dresden Music Festival is proud to host the esteemed NHK Symphony Orchestra from Japan for the first time in 2025, presenting two spectacular concerts. Under the baton of Fabio Luisi, former General Music Director of the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden, and featuring virtuoso Japanese violinist Akiko Suwanai, the evening before the official festival start will showcase Alban Berg's hauntingly beautiful Violin Concerto "To the Memory of an Angel." This poignant piece, Berg's last completed work, was composed in 1935 following the tragic news of the death of eighteen‐year‐old Manon Gropius, who suffered from polio and was the daughter of Alma Mahler and Walter Gropius. The program begins with Toru Takemitsu's "Three Film Scores" from 1994/95, a musical greeting from the artists' homeland. The evening concludes with Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, an enduring favorite and one of the most performed orchestral works by the composer.
