Attributes such as yearning, melancholy and wistfulness are the hallmarks of Portuguese fado, which describes the attitude to life of its inhabitants in beguilingly emotional melodies. The undisputed queen of this musical style is Mariza, who hails from Lisbon and has carried the “Portuguese blues” out into the world with unparalleled success in her more than twenty‐year career. Like hardly any other artist, she is able to sing about world‐weariness packed into sounds with a magnificent voice and captivating expressiveness. In keeping with the festival motto, the program is dedicated to “Amor,” to love, and invites the audience to close their eyes, stroll through the streets of the Portuguese capital, and listen to the stories that life writes.
