Dresdner Musikfestspiele: Lahav Shani & Friends
Dresden, Frauenkirche Dresden — Unterkirche
About the Event
Experience the enchanting strains of classical music by Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich, Viktor Ullmann, and Ilse Fromm‐Michaels at the iconic Frauenkirche Dresden, a jewel in the crown of Dresden's architectural heritage.
In his second appearance of the festival, Lahav Shani moves from the conductor's baton to the piano keys. Joined by the Munich Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra members, he curates a mesmerizing evening of chamber music. This performance honors the resilience and defiance of musicians who turned to music amidst persecution, or whose compositions faced censorship, in the profoundly symbolic Lower Church of the Frauenkirche, a symbol of peace and acceptance. Ilse Fromm‐Michaels, silenced due to her husband's Jewish heritage, expresses a poignant narrative in her “Musica Larga” Adagio from 1944. In the Theresienstadt ghetto, Austrian Viktor Ullmann crafted his Third String Quartet, a piece marked by melancholic grace. Dmitri Shostakovich's sole piano quintet, emerging four years following a critical Pravda article that irrevocably altered his career, narrates a poignant tale of personal turmoil amidst repression and the need to conform.
