Immerse yourself in the captivating strains of Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor at the prestigious Volksoper in Vienna.
Two wives, Frau Fluth and Frau Reich, simultaneously receive romantic letters from the destitute nobleman Falstaff, prompting them to concoct a playful revenge. Meanwhile, three suitors vie for the affections of Mrs. Reich’s daughter, Anna: her mother’s favorite, the French Dr. Cajus her father’s choice, the timid Junker Spärlich and Anna’s own beloved, the impoverished Fenton. Their romantic entanglements promise a web of delightful misadventures.
“I am attracted to narratives where women create a powerful alliance,” asserts director Nina Spijkers, whose interpretation of the opera celebrates female camaraderie in a humorous and feminist light. Collaborating with her is an all‐female creative team, featuring Tony Award‐winner Rae Smith, acclaimed for her set design in London’s epic War Horse, and costume designer Jorine van Beek.
