Volksoper Vienna: La rondine
Vienna, Volksoper Wien — Main Hall
About the Event
Experience a memorable evening of classical music at Vienna's Volksoper with Giacomo Puccini's captivating operetta La Rondine.
At Magda's salon gathering, the poet Prunier stirs controversy with his views on love. Magda, reliant on her wealthy lover Rambaldo, adheres to notions of romantic love. Disguised, she enters a ballroom, falling for the young student Ruggero. Their blissful time on the Côte d'Azur ends when Ruggero proposes marriage. Pressured by Prunier, Magda reveals her questionable past to Ruggero, resulting in their separation.
Commissioned by Vienna's Carltheater, Puccini was tasked by Alfred M. Willner and Heinz Reichert to create a Viennese operetta. However, Puccini chose to compose a through‐composed opera, incorporating elements of Viennese operetta.
Director Lotte de Beer examines Puccini's portrayal of women and his interpretation of romantic love while questioning: Who really authors the narrative of one's life?
