'Lohengrin ” is a romantic opera by Richard Wagner, which was premiered in Weimar in 1850 under the direction of Franz Liszt. “Lohengrin” is characterized by its profound, touching music and mystical symbolism and is considered one of the most important works of Romanticism. The “Knight of the Grail” symbolizes the inviolable ideals and purity that can only be preserved through trust.
First act
In the Duchy of Brabant, Elsa, the daughter of the deceased Duke, is accused of murdering her brother Gottfried. Duke Friedrich von Telramund and his wife Ortrud accuse Elsa. Ortrud has in fact enchanted Elsa's brother into a swan. Frederick, who is unaware of this, challenges Elsa to a duel to prove her guilt. Elsa, however, tells of a mysterious knight she has seen in a vision who will come to her aid.
At this moment Lohengrin appears, pulled across the river by a swan. He offers Elsa his help and agrees to fight for her. The condition, however, is that Elsa must never ask his name or where he comes from. Elsa agrees. Lohengrin defeats Friedrich in a duel, freeing Elsa from the accusations.
Act Two
Ortrud and Friedrich plot revenge against Lohengrin and Elsa. Ortrud makes Friedrich believe that Lohengrin has supernatural powers. They want to sow doubt in Elsa in order to expose the mysterious knight. Ortrud convinces Elsa to ask Lohengrin for his name and origin in order to be sure of his love. Elsa is caught up in an inner conflict and begins to doubt Lohengrin's secret.
Third Act
Elsa and Lohengrin are solemnly married, but Elsa cannot contain her curiosity. Finally, she asks Lohengrin the forbidden questions. Frederick bursts in and is killed by Lohengrin. He reveals his secret: his father is Parzival and he himself is a knight of the Grail. The swan returns to take Lohengrin away. He transforms the swan back into Gottfried, Elsa's missing brother. Lohengrin disappears. Elsa and Ortrud collapse.
