Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 7 »Lied der Nacht«
Vienna, Wiener Musikverein — Goldener Saal
About the Event

The allure of Mahler's 7th Symphony lies in its bold juxtaposition of emotions – joy and despair, illumination and obscurity. Composed amidst the serene setting of Lake Wörthersee, Mahler masterfully weaves in sounds of nature – from distinct cowbells to vivid bugle calls. Mahler himself proclaimed, “Here nature roars.” Reportedly inspired during rowing excursions, he infused the composition with rich elements from guitar and mandolin to soaring brass fanfares. The symphony features two Nachtmusiken (‘night musics’), earning its nickname, combined with subtle serenades and hauntingly beautiful tones, creating a nearly cinematic journey. Culminating in a rousing finale, it heralds the day with the grandeur of a victory procession.
The UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra ranks among the premier youth orchestras nationwide, thrilling audiences for over 21 years under Music Director David Milnes. With 15 to 18 concerts each season, they showcase a diverse array from baroque to contemporary music, with a special affinity for 20th‐century compositions. The ensemble's young musicians gain invaluable insights from esteemed affiliates of the San Francisco Symphony and Opera, along with guest appearances by artists from the Vienna Philharmonic. After their acclaimed rendition of Mahler's Fifth Symphony at the Wiener Musikverein in 2022, this year features another anticipated performance of Mahler's Seventh.
Caritas Hospice offers compassionate care for the terminally ill and their families, dedicated to enhancing or maintaining quality of life despite severe illness.
