Classic in the Crypt: Stabat Mater – Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
Vienna, Peterskirche — Krypta
About the Event
Get ready for a mesmerizing concert in the crypt beneath Vienna's Peterskirche.
Nestled deep under the main aisle of St. Peter's Church in Vienna, the crypt offers the perfect ambiance for experiencing Pergolesi's most renowned work: STABAT MATER. This poignant medieval verse portrays the Virgin Mary mourning her profound grief at the Crucifixion. Many composers, including Antonio Vivaldi, Joseph Haydn, Franz Liszt, and Giuseppe Verdi, have put this moving text to music. Yet, it was Pergolesi's STABAT MATER that became the eighteenth century's most widely printed score, which was frequently reinterpreted and adapted by others. The rendition featuring only two solo voices gained prominence over time.
Vera Klimova and Helena Milosevic's voices beautifully blend in sorrow, accompanied eloquently by Ekaterina Nokkert on piano. Their performance delicately steers the audience through the mournful composition with a nuanced grasp of its emotional depth.
The crypt maintains a comfortable climate throughout the year.
