About the Event

Experience the enchanting harmonies of classical legends Richard Strauss, Francis Poulenc, and Orazio Sciortino at the legendary Teatro Filarmonico in Verona. The final symphonic event of 2025, hosted by Fondazione Arena di Verona, is a tribute to the wind instruments in versatile ensembles. Strauss's Sonatina “from the workshop of an invalid,” despite its modest title, unfolds into an expansive and intricate composition, challenging sixteen wind instruments with advanced counterpoint, a reflection of the composer's sophisticated late style (1943) and an essential element of Fondazione Arena's ongoing dedication to Strauss's orchestral works.

Accompanied by select strings, timpani, and solo piano, Poulenc's distinctive 'choreographic concerto' Aubade (1929), inspired by early morning medieval pieces, portrays in nine parts the tale of Goddess Diana and the hunter Actaeon, who, upon discovering her bathing, is transformed into a stag. The 2025 season also introduces the talented Enrico Fagone, a former double bassist turned promising conductor.

Taking the piano is Orazio Sciortino, a dynamic and acclaimed composer, who premieres a new work commissioned by the Arena Foundation, marking its debut in this musical lineup.
