Teatro Filarmonico di Verona: Mahler's Canto della notte
Verona, Teatro Filarmonico — main
About the Event
Delve into the depths of classical music with an unprecedented performance of Gustav Mahler’s masterpieces at the esteemed Teatro Filarmonico in Verona. For the first time in its fifty‐year history, Fondazione Arena’s Orchestra embarks on the intricate and profound composition of Mahler’s Seventh Symphony. This piece, considered a pinnacle of his later, symphonic period alongside the well‐known Fifth and the poignant Sixth, quickly became known as “Nachtlied /Song of the Night” after its completion in 1906 and debut in 1908, due to the mood, themes, and inception conditions of the work.
Mahler’s inspiration for the piece’s initial, enigmatic march struck during a serene nocturnal boat trip across the alpine Maiernigg Lake. Leading up to a grand final rondo that resolves all preceding tension, he navigates through nocturnal soundscapes featuring two serenades adorned with elements like mandolins and distant cowbells. At the heart of the symphony lies a haunting scherzo “of shadows,” creating a comprehensive and compelling musical odyssey.
Taking the reigns of this richly assembled arenian orchestra is the renowned German conductor Marcus Bosch.
