Philharmonia Orchestra & Esa‐Pekka Salonen: Mahler

About the Event

Esa‐Pekka Salonen and Gustav Mahler are a strange combination. Both blend the roles of composer and conductor in a single person. Moreover, it was Mahler’s Third Symphony which pressed Salonen into the role of conductor when he was forced stand in for a sick Michael Tilson Thomas in 1984. Since then he has nourished both passions with alternating priorities. In Pollux, Salonen shows us how he turned a rhythmic pattern, which he couldn’t get out of his head, into a multi‐coloured fresco for a full symphonic orchestra. Mahler’s Ninth Symphony may be 110 years old, but there are no cobwebs on Salonen’s interpretation!
