Joyce DiDonato & Il Complesso Barocco

About the Event

In the concert series "Great Voices", you will experience mezzo‐soprano Joyce DiDonato with the ensemble Il Complesso Barocco performing arias by Händel at the Centre for Fine Arts.

Cecilia Bartoli, Joyce DiDonato, Rolando Villazón, and a Belgian singer whose career is taking off, Sophie Karthäuser… No, we are not talking about the Bastille or the Met, but about some of the great voices you can hear this season at the Centre for Fine Arts!

Nothing quite matches the physical and emotional impact of a diva. La Bartoli, for example, whose pyrotechnics appeal to a public far beyond the usual classical audience. The title of her new recital — "Liaisons dangereuses" (Dangerous Liaisons) — promises a selection of the most malicious seductions of the 17th century. Another mezzo, Joyce DiDonato, covers some similar territory — Handel, Mozart, and Rossini — with similar devastation. A "24‐carat gold" voice, proclaimed The Times, after she won a Grammy Award. Rolando Villazón, one of the most celebrated Alfredos (in La Traviata), could prove her match, now that he has turned to Mozart under the guidance of one of the finest baroque conductors, Rinaldo Alessandrini. Belgium's Sophie Karthäuser, hailed by Le Monde as the "Reine de la soirée" (queen of the evening) in René Jacobs's Magic Flute, has opted for the concentrated emotion of the love lieder of Clara and Robert Schumann, along with mélodies by Hahn, Poulenc, and Satie.
