Good Friday Concert at Konzerthaus Berlin
About the Event
Experience a soul‐stirring Good Friday concert at Konzerthausorchester Berlin, under the baton of Justin Doyle. The RIAS Chamber Choir joins forces with eminent soloists Katie Bray (alto), Robert Murray (tenor), and Hanno Müller‐Brachmann (bass) for a performance of Haydn's 'The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross'.
The emotional depth of Haydn's masterpiece, originally an instrumental sequence, is profound and inescapable. Composed for a Passion service, it encompasses seven slow movements along with a prelude and a climactic final piece, 'Il Terremoto' (the earthquake). After experiencing a German adaptation of his instrumental work in Passau in 1794, Haydn was compelled to craft the vocal rendition that premiered in Vienna two years later. This vocal form became exceedingly popular amongst choral societies in the 19th century, solidifying its place as a key Passion setting performed globally.
