Though composed only five years apart, Beethoven's Symphonies No. 1 and No. 3 are eons apart in spirit. The First Symphony owes much to the Classical style of Beethoven's teacher Haydn, while the Third Symphony is, of course, the "Eroica", a grandly scaled, muscular work which throws wide the doors of Romanticism.
