Black light theatre has its origins in ancient China. The inaugural performance was crafted for the emperor’s delight, using the allure of a straightforward secret—the darkness. Performers don black costumes with gloves and masks, and use fluorescent lights to highlight objects painted with phosphorescent dye, creating a stunning optical illusion. As actors move these glowing elements, it gives the impression that they are effortlessly floating in midair.

For this magic spectacle to succeed, the theatre must be completely enveloped in darkness throughout the show. Both the stage and audience remain shrouded in pitch black, allowing no light to intrude. This is the mystical “black cabinet,” the namesake of black light theatre.
