Pre‐Concert Talk with Robert Hugill
Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, one of the first works to pair clarinet with string quartet, remained admired but little emulated until Brahms’ wrote his late masterpiece, whilst David Gow’s Quintet is one of a number of English works that stretch back to Sir Charles Villiers Stanford’s admiration for Brahms’ work.

Written at the time of Napoleon’s invasion of Vienna (for the second time in four years), Beethoven’s Serioso Quartet is his shortest and most compact. It also represented his temporary farewell to the quartet genre before starting his late quartets in 15 years later. Shostakovich’s First String Quartet represents the beginning of a remarkable sequence of intensely private, personal pieces and the start of his long friendship with the Beethoven Quartet who gave the Moscow premiere of the work
