Dresdner Musikfestspiele: Heinrich Heine. Paris. Musik
Dresden, Palais im Großen Garten — Main Hall
About the Event
A compelling recital exploring the works of Heinrich Heine, with readings and music by Benjamin Appl and James Baillieu.
Heinrich Heine – ingenious poet, freethinker and columnist – spent half of his life in the French capital. Censored in his German homeland, the “fatherland of champagne and the Marseillaise” was a vibrant refuge from political oppression. In Paris, too, he threw himself into social life, took a lively interest in musical life and made the acquaintance of countless soloists, composers and conductors. With a sharp tongue, he commented on everything around him throughout his life and, with wit and intellect, joined the ranks of the most set‐to poets in the German language. His poem “You are like a flower” was set to music a full 400 times! This wonderful evening of words and music, featuring star baritone Benjamin Appl, “Iffland‐Ring‐Träger” Jens Harzer, the great actress Barbara Auer and James Baillieu, one of the leading song accompanists, follows in the footsteps of Heinrich Heine.
“… this resounding flood”. Musical reading with texts by Heinrich Heine and music by Vincenzo Bellini, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Fanny Hensel, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Friedrich Silcher, Sigismund Thalberg, Pauline Viardot‐García and Richard Wagner
