Originally from Mozambique, she was raised in Lisbon. Her musical journey began with gospel and jazz, eventually dedicating herself to fado, the quintessential Portuguese music. Her debut in 2001 with the album Fado em Mim confirmed this fate. Mariza not only set remarkable sales records for the genre, but she continues to be a leading figure more than twenty years later. She has opened doors for artists like Carminho, Sara Correia, and Gisela João to bring fado from quaint settings to grand stages. In 2024‐25, Mariza is set to launch her latest album, marking her first in four years! Mariza’s name now stands synonymous with fado’s esteemed heritage, her music, however, transcends it.
