Belgian National Orchestra, Gabel & Tharaud
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Henry le Boeuf Hall
About the Event
Experience an evening of enchanting classical music featuring works by Olivier Messiaen, Maurice Ravel, and Claude Debussy at Brussels's esteemed Palais des Beaux‐Arts, a venue celebrated globally for its impeccable acoustics and historical significance. Maurice Ravel contemplated a piano concerto long before he was commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein in 1929. Wittgenstein, an Austrian pianist who lost his right arm during World War I, continued to make music by adapting pieces and requesting new compositions tailored to his needs. Ravel undertook this unique challenge, creating the somber yet profound Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major, a composition of arresting depth, performed in a single movement. Concurrently, Ravel completed the Piano Concerto in G major, a luminous piece infused with jazz influences and Basque folk tunes, originally intended to be titled ‘Divertissement,’ reflecting its lighter, more playful tone.
