Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Sol Gabetta, Tugan Sokhiev at Philharmonie Berlin
Berlin, Philharmonie Berlin — Grosser Saal
About the Event
For most people, the diagnosis of a serious illness may lead to despair and numbness — not so for Dmitri Shostakovich. His creative energy was diametrically opposed to his fate, and in 1959 he composed one of the greatest works of the 20th century in this genre, the First Cello Concerto.
With her ability to fully engage with an interpretative task, exceptional cellist Sol Gabetta is the ideal choice for this highly dramatic work. Carried by the velvety, powerful sound of her Guadagnini cello, the extended, monologue‐like cadenza in particular conveys the maturity of Gabetta's interpretation, which she has been honing since the age of 15. As an epic finale to the evening, Tugan Sokhiev unleashes the full late‐romantic sonority of the traditional Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden in Bruckner's Seventh, which Richard Wagner described in his day as his “miracle harp”.
