Willem Brons Presents Satomi Chihara & Miri Kim
Amsterdam, De Waalse Kerk
About the Event
In the concert series Willem Brons presents (third season), Willem Brons, the éminence grise among Dutch pianists, introduces audiences to successful former students. This season's third concert will be played by Satomi Chihara (piano) and Miri Kim (violin) who participated as a duo in Willem Brons' 28th International Masterclass.
Above all, the first half of the program expresses pure love because in Clara Schumann's three romances you can hear the loving devotion to her beloved Robert. Clara also felt Clara's affection for Brahms after all, it was he who illuminated her life after Robert's tragic death. When Brahms sent a letter to Felix, Clara's youngest son, he included the main theme of the second movement of his first violin sonata. Clara was so fond of this sonata that she declared, I want to take this work with me into the afterlife!
The second movement of this concert focuses on an entirely different theme: death. After all, Poulenc's sonata is an in memoriam for the Spanish poet Enrico Gracia, who was executed during the Spanish Civil War. The first performance was given by the phenomenal violinist Ginette Neveu, who, some years after the first performance in 1944, died in a tragic plane crash. A shocked Poulenc then changed the ending of the sonata. Debussy's sonata — his swan song — was composed while Debussy was already facing death. Nevertheless, this work exudes a tremendous zest for life.
