Iconic big band albums
Just how diverse Quincy Jones' music is becomes clear during this tribute. Before intermission, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw will play Jones' big band music. Quincy Jones once began as a jazz trumpeter and arranger, studying music theory in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen. In the 1950s, he toured Europe with several bands and laid the foundation for his international fame with the albums The Quintessence and Bigband Bossa Nova. With these iconic albums, he renewed the big band sound with new grooves and exotic melodies. The second part of this concert focuses on the special friendship between Quincy Jones and Ray Charles, with the songs the two greats recorded together. Singer Berget Lewis will take the vocals.
