Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence and Maria Milstein plays Mozart
Amsterdam, Concertgebouw — Main Hall
About the Event
Dutch Music Prize winner Maria Milstein will solo in Mozart's Fifth Violin Concerto, also called the “Turkish” concerto because of the rousing marching music in the last movement. Tchaikovsky's sunny memories of Italy resound in a new arrangement by Michael Waterman for his own Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra.
Mozart's radiant violin concerto
'Intensely musical, utterly vain and uncompromisingly devoted to the composer's wishes,' NRC wrote praisingly of Maria Milstein when she won the prestigious Dutch Music Prize in 2018. The eminent violinist, also known from the successful Van Baerle Trio, will solo in Mozart's upbeat Fifth Violin Concerto, nicknamed “Turkish. The rousing march in the last movement is reminiscent of Mozart's famous Rondo 'alla Turca' from his Eleventh Piano Sonata.
Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence for chamber orchestra
Tchaikovsky made the first sketches for his string sextet Souvenir de Florence in 1890, shortly after a pleasant stay in the inspiring capital of Tuscany. Although the title refers to this vacation, the work contains no Italian themes or opera melodies. Although it had been a great challenge to write something for a string sextet, Tchaikovsky was ultimately very pleased with the result. The Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra plays a new version for chamber orchestra, created by concertmaster Michael Waterman.
